Artist in the Limelight: Susi Ryan
Fiber Artist, Essex Junction

To say it was love at first sight upon seeing the little felted rabbit at the Artists’ Medium Art Shop in Cambridge would be an understatement. Of all the skillfully created items carefully nestled in the display case, the whimsical bunny stood out.

There was no doubt, its creator was pure genius. We had to know more.

Fiber bunny created by Essex Junction artist, Susi Ryan of the The Felted Gnome Knows.

The Felted Gnome Knows

It didn’t take long to discover the bunny was created by Essex Junction artist Susi Ryan.
Susi’s company, The Felted Gnome Knows, specializes in needle felted toys and sculptures, wet felted wearable art, and needle felting supplies. She also teaches classes.

“I started needle felting and wet felting with Vermont sourced wool in 2011,” Susi explains. “I specialize is whimsy, fairy tales and of course gnomes!”

Her chosen medium combines needle felting or sculpting wool, with wet felting to merge art and craft.

“The fleece becomes what I see or want to see in the world while staying firmly rooted in the natural world,” she says in her artist’s statement on her website.

“Whether it be a piece of functional art such as hand felted slippers decorated with my impression of snowdrops to a Red bellied Woodpecker to a soft woman’s body emerging from a sheepskin it brings me an indescribable feeling of anticipation, excitement, joy and power,” Susi states.

Find Susi on facebook and be prepared to oooh and ahhh at the images she shares. From a golden lab to a basket of baby bunnies, mermaid dolls to — what else — gnomes!
